1995 Mercedes-Benz SL320 (R129)

This 26 -year-old Mercedes-Benz SL320 (R129) is from the private collection of H&L Classics which we have owned for over three years, and it is now ready for a new enthusiast to enjoy.

The SL R129 – with its classic Teutonic styling by the venerable Bruno Sacco – is undoubtably one of the best-looking young timer Mercedes-Benz classics to come out of Stuttgart. A highly competent roadster with the qualities of a grand tourer, it is at its best with the top-down cruising down the motorway or along twisty scenic bends. Of late, the SL R129 has become desirable among enthusiasts and collectors alike.

This 1995/96 Mercedes-Benz SL320 came from the factory in Azurite Blue – Metallic (366U). In our opinion, this colour is arguably one of the best for a post-facelift model. This car still has original factory paint and refurbished the 8-hole Alamak rims in Brilliant Silver 744 accompanied by brand new extended lug bolts to match. Even the front fender vent grilles – which are almost always missing on R129s on the road – have been replaced with the original grilles as from the factory.

We have taken pains to ensure that the convertible top is in good working order. All 12 hydraulic cylinders have been refurbished with new seals and operates well with a strong pump and no hydraulic leaks. The soft top fabric is still the original canvas from the factory, as evidenced by the Wopavin logo on the plastic rear windows. Despite the age, the plastic rear windows are still clear.

Throughout our three-year ownership, we have worked through the mechanical and electrical gremlins to ensure that the car starts and drives reliably and safely. The M104 24-valve 3.2 litre inline-six engine fires up strongly even when cold and delivers 228 hp @ 6400 rpm and 265 N⋅m of torque @ 4600 rpm. We have sourced for and reinstated all missing engine cover trims. The engine coolant temperature barely touches 90 degrees Celsius even in stop-and-go traffic on a hot day. The engine is mated to a reliable five-speed automatic, delivering smooth shifting throughout all gears.

The interior has been extensively reworked. All the brittle plastic parts such as the sun visors and dome light have either been replaced or renewed to ensure many more years of service. The leather on the seats is still original with some minor cracks, with the perforation and stitching to. The floor mats are of the classic velour style, as provided by the dealer when new.

The car has been shod with brand new 225/55R16 Michelin Primacy 4 tires all round for a quiet and comfortable drive.

This example came with several options from the factory, including memory seats for the driver and passenger, climate control with air conditioning, electrically adjustable steering column, orthopedic seats, and the desirable panoramic hard top.

This vehicle comes complete with all the accessories: an owner’s manual, two original infrared remote keys and valet key, toolkit with the special convertible top wrench, first aid kit, full spare tire, warning triangle, wind deflector, wind deflector trunk cover, and the classic Becker cassette radio with Bluetooth modification from the early 90s with code.

This car also has a valid classic car certificate from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), which entitles the owner to 80% relief in road tax.
